Independent Monitoring Board Releases 25th Report on Polio Eradication Efforts
The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) has welcomed the release of the Independent Monitoring Board's (IMB) 25th report, which evaluates global progress toward eradicating polio and sustaining a polio-free world. The publication marks the first assessment conducted under the IMB's expanded mandate to review long-term sustainability efforts alongside eradication milestones.
According to the report, notable achievements have been made, including the interruption of circulating variant poliovirus outbreaks across five countries and accelerated measures regarding poliovirus containment. However, the assessment identifies several persistent obstacles facing global health authorities.
The IMB highlighted that wild poliovirus transmission continues in Afghanistan and Pakistan beyond the targets established in the current strategic timeline. The report notes that the epidemiological burden has become increasingly concentrated in Afghanistan, even as Pakistan demonstrates genuine progress. Additional challenges outlined include ongoing outbreaks of circulating variant poliovirus, gaps in surveillance and routine immunization, and the effects of a constrained global financing environment on critical health operations.
To address these hurdles, the IMB delivered 21 recommendations designed to advance eradication efforts and reinforce systems necessary to maintain a polio-free status. These recommendations focus on strengthening accountability, establishing clear ownership, and ensuring measurable delivery.
The GPEI stated that its partnership will review the findings and recommendations to determine subsequent actions.
