ECDC Assesses Risk to General European Population as Very Low Following Fourth Imported Ebola Case
A healthcare worker based in the Democratic Republic of the Congo who tested positive for Bundibugyo virus on 29 September is being medically evacuated to the Netherlands for specialised care, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) announced.
According to the ECDC, the overall risk of Ebola to the general population in Europe remains very low. The agency noted that imported cases among healthcare workers, outbreak responders, and humanitarian personnel are not unexpected given their differing levels of exposure compared to the general public.
This incident marks the fourth case tied to the current outbreak that has been imported into Europe. The three previous cases were similarly associated with individuals undertaking medical or humanitarian work in affected regions.
The agency stated that medical evacuations for Ebola patients are carefully planned and coordinated. It noted that the likelihood of onward transmission remains very low when appropriate infection prevention and control protocols are observed.
The ECDC continues to advise European Union and European Economic Area countries to maintain preparedness for imported cases. The agency has provided guidance, operational tools, laboratory advice, and resources for healthcare professionals to support the rapid identification, isolation, and management of suspected cases.
