The Department of Defence announced on 30 September 2026 that the endangered nabarlek wallaby has been recorded at two new locations within the Yampi Sound Training Area in Western Australia's Kimberley region. The findings include one area where the marsupial had not been documented for more than 50 years.
The Yampi Sound Training Area is situated on Defence land and is listed as one of 20 priority locations under the Australian Government’s Threatened Species Action Plan due to its environmental values and remote habitat. The nabarlek, which measures approximately 36 centimetres in length, is considered one of Australia's rarest marsupials.
The sightings were confirmed through a partnership between Defence contractor Ventia, the Australian Wildlife Conservancy (AWC), and the Dambimangari Aboriginal Corporation. Field teams, including AWC staff and Dambimangari rangers, detected the wallabies using remote camera monitoring combined with genetic analysis.
Brigadier Gabrielle Follett, Director General Estate Service Delivery, stated that the discovery demonstrates how land management and environmental stewardship partnerships can produce conservation outcomes while continuing to support Defence capability in remote training areas.
