The Nortongong Biodiversity Restoration Project, located near Coonamble in north-west New South Wales, has been officially registered under the Nature Repair Market scheme as its third project, according to the Clean Energy Regulator.
The project aims to restore 968 hectares of cleared land by replanting native vegetation. Proponents expect the replanting activities to support the recovery of the Weeping Myall open woodland ecosystem.
Project proponent Wilga Farming and agent Verdant Partners plan to pair the Nature Repair Market initiative with carbon abatement activities under the Australian Carbon Credit Unit (ACCU) Scheme. These carbon activities will utilize the Reforestation by Environmental or Mallee Plantings method.
According to the announcement, the financial viability of the project will be backed by income generated from tradeable ACCUs. The project is intended to show how agricultural operators can integrate biodiversity and carbon initiatives alongside existing production, with the landholder planning to resume livestock grazing after the native plantings become established.
Details regarding the project are available on the official Biodiversity Market Register.
