Article: In an exciting collaboration, leading companies in the 3D industry, including Pixar, Adobe, Apple, Autodesk, and NVIDIA, have announced the formation of the Alliance for OpenUSD (AOUSD). The primary goal of this alliance is to promote the standardization, development, evolution, and growth of Pixar’s Universal Scene Description (USD) technology.

OpenUSD, created by Pixar Animation Studios, is a powerful 3D scene description technology that allows for robust interoperability across tools, data, and workflows. It has already gained recognition for its ability to streamline cinematic content production and capture artistic expression collaboratively. Now, with the formation of AOUSD, the alliance aims to advance the capabilities of OpenUSD, promoting greater interoperability of 3D tools and data.

By standardizing the 3D ecosystem, the alliance intends to enable developers and content creators to work seamlessly on large-scale 3D projects and expand the range of 3D-enabled products and services. The alliance will develop written specifications for OpenUSD, ensuring compatibility and wider adoption across the industry.

The project will be housed by the Joint Development Foundation (JDF), an affiliate of the Linux Foundation, providing an open and efficient development environment for OpenUSD specifications. This will also pave the way for recognition through the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

The formation of AOUSD signals the continued evolution of OpenUSD as a technology and its potential to become an international standard. The alliance invites other companies and organizations to join and contribute to shaping the future of OpenUSD.

Representatives from the alliance will be speaking at the Academy Software Foundation’s Open Source Days and the SIGGRAPH conference, sharing insights about OpenUSD and its impact on the industry.
