“Queensland Celebrates Major Milestone: 8 Billion Containers Returned through Container Refund Scheme”

Australia, QLD

Article: The Queensland Cabinet and Ministerial Directory announced a major milestone in the state’s Container Refund Scheme. Over 8 billion drink containers have been returned through the popular Containers for Change scheme, which was launched in November 2018. The scheme provides a 10-cent refund for eligible drink containers, encouraging recycling and reducing waste.

Environment Minister Leanne Linard and Container Exchange CEO Natalie Roach celebrated the achievement at the Community Co Recycling Depot in Brisbane. The scheme has seen significant growth, with the latest milestone reached in just six months after the seven billionth container was returned in September 2023.

Since its expansion in November 2023 to include glass wine and spirit bottles, the scheme has observed a 13.5% increase in glass bottle returns. This expansion has contributed to the overall success of the program, which has diverted a staggering 400,000 tonnes of waste from landfill.

Not only is the scheme beneficial for the environment, but it has also provided $800 million in refunds to Queenslanders. Charities and community groups have received approximately $12 million of that amount.

The success of the Containers for Change scheme demonstrates the dedication of Queenslanders to container recycling and highlights the positive impact of the initiative on the environment. The government aims to continue growing the program, exploring new ideas to further increase recycling rates.

To participate in the scheme, customers can download the Containers for Change app to track their refunds and choose from various collection points including depots, 24-hour bag drops, self-serve reverse vending machine kiosks, and free home collection. With this major milestone, Queensland is on the path to a more sustainable future.
