ACT electric vehicles lend a power-boosting hand during grid emergency

Article: During a significant power emergency in February 2024, sixteen Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Government electric vehicles (EVs) contributed vital power back into Australia’s electricity grid, demonstrating the efficiency of vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology. This remarkable achievement is believed to be one of the first instances of V2G technology being used to address a power emergency worldwide.

The incident was triggered by a blackout on the Australian energy grid caused by severe storms in Melbourne. At the time, 16 government fleet EVs were connected to V2G smart chargers across the ACT, with four actively charging and twelve idle. These vehicles swiftly responded to the grid’s signal and started supplying power within seconds, precisely as they were programmed to do.

Minister for Water, Energy and Emissions Reduction Shane Rattenbury emphasized the importance of this innovative and clean energy technology in ensuring the security of the electricity grid while minimizing transport emissions. The V2G technology, which uses a bidirectional charger, allows energy from EV batteries to be quickly sent back into the grid, similar to rooftop solar power.

The ACT Government continues to lead in the adoption of groundbreaking and sustainable energy solutions. With electric vehicle uptake on the rise, V2G technology may play an essential role in the ACT and across Australia as the nation transitions its energy systems away from fossil fuels to achieve 100% renewable energy.

This achievement showcases the potential of electric vehicles to contribute to the stability and security of the national energy grid. The REVS project, co-funded by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) and the ACT Government, marks a significant step forward in Australia’s energy evolution.
