ACT Government Investing in Public School Teachers through Scholarships

ACT, Australia

Article: The ACT Government has announced the opening of applications for the ACT Teacher Scholarships program, an initiative aimed at providing financial support for ACT public school teachers and school leaders to pursue further education, training, and research. The annual program offers three streams of teacher scholarships: Priority Area, Master of Education (University of Canberra), and Master of Education (Teacher Librarianship).

Minister for Education Yvette Berry emphasized the importance of continued training and development for the teaching workforce. “As we continue to address the impact of the teacher shortage in our schools, upskilling our existing teachers and providing further incentives to recruit new teachers is an important step we can take in making our public schools an employer of choice,” said Berry.

Priority Area Scholarships offer up to $10,000 for study related to students with complex needs and challenging behaviors, languages, STEM subjects, and other educational qualifications with a link to the Future of Education Strategy. The Master of Education (Teacher Librarianship) Scholarship provides funding of up to $22,000, while the Master of Education (University of Canberra) Scholarship offers fully-funded access to a Masters degree designed for teachers to utilize intensive study periods during the school holidays.

Past scholarship recipient, Jamie Walkden, shared his experience, saying, “Being able to connect with other teachers from across the Directorate was really beneficial to me – I could network, share ideas, and collaborate beyond our schools.”

Interested ACT public school teachers and school leaders can contact the Teacher Scholarship Secretariat on 6207 0740 or Applications close on Friday, June 28.
