Australia, VIC

Article:

On May 8th, 2024, the Victorian government announced new infrastructure upgrades to the racing industry in Ballarat, Western Victoria. These upgrades aim to boost the local economy, benefit trainers and racegoers, and improve animal welfare.

Minister for Racing Anthony Carbines visited the Ballarat Racecourse, Burrumbeet Racecourse, and The Ballarat Greyhounds at Morshead Park to announce the milestones achieved through three racing infrastructure projects. The Victorian government has invested almost $3 million in these projects.

One of the notable upgrades is the new training track at Ballarat Racecourse, which has increased the club’s capacity from 400 horses to 650 over the past six years. The government provided over $1.3 million from the Victorian Racing Industry Fund for this project.

Burrumbeet Racecourse has secured funding from the government’s Regional Customer Facilities Grant program to install large shade sails. These sails will cover the family play area and mounting yard, allowing year-round use and protecting racegoers from the elements.

The Ballarat Greyhound Racing Club has also constructed a new kennel building, improving the quality and safety of greyhound racing at Morshead Park.

These upgrades not only enhance the racing experience but also contribute to the local economy. The racing industry in the Ballarat region generates $89.1 million for the Victorian economy and sustains almost 700 full-time equivalent jobs.

Since 2014, the Victorian government has provided over $10.2 million to support various racing events and infrastructure projects. More information on the Victorian Racing Industry Fund and the Regional Customer Facilities Grant program can be found on the government’s website.
