Business Sector Demands Clarity from Liberal Party on Major Events Support

Australia, SA

Article: The business sector in South Australia is demanding clarity from the Liberal Party on their support for major events such as Gather Round and LIV Golf. The Australian Hotels Association (AHA) called for bipartisan support for these events, which have proven to be transformational for the state’s hotel sector.

Opposition Leader David Speirs has created a divide within his own party by expressing discomfort with taxpayers’ funds being spent on major events. He has taken regular shots at LIV Golf, stating that it “doesn’t sit well” with him. This has raised concerns among the business community about the future of these events under a potential Liberal Government.

LIV Golf, which injected nearly $65 million into South Australia last year and was named the World’s Best Golf Event, has had a significant economic impact. Similarly, the inaugural Gather Round event brought in $83 million to the visitor economy, with this year’s event setting a new accommodation record.

Stephen Mullighan, a representative of the government, acknowledged the AHA’s perspective, highlighting the significant economic contributions made by these events. The business community rightfully questions whether a future Liberal Government would continue to support these events, considering the Marshall Liberal Government’s decision to cut the Adelaide 500.

The demand for clarity from the Liberal Party on their stance regarding these major events is crucial for the business sector to plan for the future and ensure the continued success of South Australia’s economy.
