Commissioner’s Statement on Investigation into Conflict of Interest Allegations,

Australia, Crime and Police, SA

Article: In a recent statement, the Commissioner of Police addressed the findings of Parliament Report 2024/02, which highlighted allegations of conflict of interest and nepotism involving public sector employees, particularly serving police officers. The Commissioner stated that such allegations are taken seriously and warrant thorough investigation.

The matter was initially referred to the Independent Commissioner Against Corruption (ICAC) by the South Australia Police (SAPOL) after being identified through the existing complaint process. The ICAC conducted two separate investigations into the allegations against officers involved in the Recruit 313 initiative.

The Commissioner reassured the public that such conduct will not be tolerated and will be acted upon. Following the conclusion of the ICAC investigations, SAPOL carried out its own internal disciplinary procedures, resulting in disciplinary actions against a number of officers under the Police Complaints and Discipline Act. The Office of Public Integrity (OPI) provided oversight during this process.

The ICAC made four recommendations to the Commissioner of Police, all of which have been adopted. These recommendations aim to improve and tighten procedures and policies surrounding conflict of interest and the Code of Conduct within SAPOL. Internal reviews have also been conducted to implement necessary changes and raise awareness of the issues to prevent similar conduct from occurring in the future.

The changes proposed will enhance management strategies to address conflicts of interest, both actual and perceived, and establish more robust reporting processes with increased accountability.

Maintaining public trust and confidence in the police is of utmost importance, and these efforts to address and prevent conflicts of interest within the force are crucial in achieving this goal.
