Free + Equal Conference: A Call for Human Rights Act in Australia

Australia, Human Rights

Article: In a resounding success, the Free + Equal Conference brought together over 700 human rights advocates from across Australia to discuss the urgent need for a Human Rights Act. The conference, held in Sydney, was a significant platform for timely discussions about human rights in the country. Age Discrimination Commissioner Robert Fitzgerald AM warned of an increased risk of elder abuse due to the ongoing cost-of-living crisis. Over 60 eminent experts called on the Federal Government to introduce a Human Rights Act, buoyed by last week’s Parliamentary Joint Committee On Human Rights report. The conference addressed various aspects of human rights, including the rights of Indigenous peoples and the need for unity in addressing gendered violence. The appointment of Hugh de Kretser as the Commission’s new President was also welcomed, marking a potential shift towards positive change for communities whose human rights are at risk.
