Man arrested over grass fires,

Police have arrested a man following a number of spot fires in the southern suburbs this morning. Authorities were alerted to the situation after reports of suspicious activity and possible arson were made.

Around 7am on Monday 6 May, police received a call regarding a man acting suspiciously in the bushes on Minchinbury Terrace. Witnesses reported seeing the man potentially starting a fire. Meanwhile, another grass fire was reported at Crozier Terrace in Sturt at around the same time.

Responding swiftly, the police initiated a search in the area with the assistance of dog operations. They were able to locate a suspect who matched the witnesses’ description. The individual was seen fleeing across Brighton Road and was promptly apprehended. It was later discovered that the suspect had been riding a stolen bicycle in the area.

A 37-year-old man, who is believed to be of no fixed address, has been charged with two counts of arson and theft. The suspect has been denied bail and is scheduled to appear in the Christies Beach Magistrates Court today.
