Payroll Jobs Rise Modestly in May 2024, Reflecting School Holiday Variations

Australia, Police

Article: According to the latest data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), payroll jobs in Australia experienced a slight increase of 0.

May 11, 2024.

Bjorn Jarvis, the ABS head of labour statistics, noted that this rise was less pronounced than the usual rebound seen after the Easter and autumn school holidays.

The timing of school holidays, which can vary between states and territories, has an impact on seasonal changes in payroll jobs, particularly in the Education and training sector.

In terms of annual growth, the strongest industries were Electricity, gas, water and waste services, Health care and social assistance, Mining, Public administration and safety, and Education and training.

However, compared to the previous year, payroll job growth has been slower in 2023-24.

It is important to consider that the timing of school holidays in 2024 differed across the country.

For instance, in Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia, and the Northern Territory, school holidays occurred in the first half of April, while in other parts of the country, they took place in the second half of April.

Notably, payroll jobs in Education and training accounted for approximately 85 percent of the total rise in the month.

These variations highlight the need for careful analysis when interpreting payroll job data, taking into account factors such as school holidays and their impact on specific industries.
