Australian Defence Force Delivers International Sports Program in Solomon Islands
The Australian Defence Force (ADF) Sports Branch launched its International Sports Program in Honiara, Solomon Islands, on 28 September 2026, delivering training across multiple sporting disciplines.
During the initiative, ADF Sports conducted programs in volleyball, hockey, netball, and tennis. Participants—including members of the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force and the local sports community—undertook accreditation and skill development in coaching, umpiring, first aid, and sports training.
This year marked the initial inclusion of hockey and tennis in the program, alongside netball. Sitting volleyball was also added to support disability sports development and inclusive participation.
Captain Matthew Mitchell, officer in charge of the international sports program, stated that the initiative highlights the partnership between Australia and the Solomon Islands. He noted that the program focuses on sharing expertise, investing in local capability, and connecting people from diverse backgrounds.
Alison Burchell, Chief Executive Officer of the Solomon Islands National Sports Council, emphasized the need for local athletics to transition from general participation to a competitive mindset aimed at reaching finals and winning medals. Burchell stated that strong coaches and officials are vital to creating strong athletes, expressing appreciation to the ADF and the Australian High Commission for supporting local capability development and community sports growth.
