NSW Government Announces Expansion of Sydney Prison Capacity

The New South Wales Government has announced plans to add nearly 1,000 extra prison beds across metropolitan Sydney to address rising inmate numbers driven by stricter bail laws. The initiative involves recommissioning the Dawn de Loas Correctional Centre at Silverwater and expediting additional capacity at Parklea Correctional Centre.
The plan is backed by a $47.1 million investment to reopen the 515-bed Dawn de Loas facility, which is slated to be operational in early 2027. Approximately 150 staff will be recruited to support its operations. An additional 360 beds are being fast-tracked at Parklea Correctional Centre, which the government is set to transition back into public management on October 1.
According to the government, the expansion responds to record remand numbers across the state. In September, 6,398 people were held on remand, representing 46 per cent of the adult prison population. One-third of the remand population currently faces charges related to domestic and family violence.
The influx follows legal reforms introduced in 2024 that heightened bail requirements for alleged serious domestic violence offenders, requiring them to "show cause" for release and directing courts to weigh specific risk indicators. Bail decisions were also restricted to magistrates and judges rather than registrars.
Authorities stated that reopening Dawn de Loas will provide minimum-security space to relieve strain on the Metropolitan Remand and Reception Centre (MRRC). Alongside the correctional expansions, the government noted an investment of $184.1 million aimed at boosting frontline domestic and family violence services.
