Multiple People Injured and Driver Arrested After Vehicle Strikes Crowd Near Newcastle
Multiple people were injured and a driver was arrested after a vehicle struck a crowd near Wallsend on Saturday morning, according to the NSW Police Force. Emergency services were called to the scene at the Newcastle Link Road and Transfield Drive roundabout at approximately 9:30 a.m. on October 3, 2026.
Officers from the Newcastle City Police District responded alongside Traffic and Highway Patrol Command officers and NSW Ambulance paramedics. Police reported that several injured individuals were treated at the scene.
The driver of the vehicle was taken into custody at the location of the incident.
Following the collision, Newcastle Link Road was closed in both directions. Police stated the closure was expected to remain in place for some time to allow inquiries to continue.
The incident disrupted the planned route for the Newcastle Knights grand final procession, prompting organizers to divert the procession along an alternate route. The team bus has since departed Newcastle. Police noted that the diversion may have prevented some supporters from seeing the team.
Authorities have asked members of the public to safely disperse from the area and keep roadways clear to facilitate traffic management and emergency response operations. Anyone with information regarding the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
