Australian Government Begins Fourth Statutory Review of WELS Scheme
The Australian Government has launched the fourth statutory review of the Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards (WELS) scheme and the WELS Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA). The evaluation, which will be conducted by Grosvenor, is scheduled to deliver its final report in March 2027.
The WELS scheme undergoes a review every five years to assess its value and its role in helping Australians use water more efficiently.
According to the announcement, the review will examine several areas, including the scheme's current successes, its benefits, and potential areas for improvement. It will also explore ways to further reduce water consumption across Australia and evaluate whether the WELS Intergovernmental Agreement continues to fulfill its purpose.
Public consultation involving industry representatives, consumer groups, state and territory governments, and other stakeholders is anticipated to take place across October and November. A discussion paper and details on how to submit feedback will be made available on the Water Rating website. The final report is slated for publication on the website following its tabling in Parliament.
