Town Hall Square Proposal Declared State Significant Development in Sydney
The City of Sydney’s proposal to create a new public square opposite Sydney Town Hall has been officially declared a State Significant Development (SSD), according to an announcement from the New South Wales government.
The declaration follows advice from the Independent Planning Commission (IPC), which reviewed information submitted by both the City of Sydney and the Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure. The IPC determined that the project holds state and regional planning significance.
The decision was enacted under section 4.36 of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979.
If the City of Sydney submits an SSD development application, the proposal will be delegated to the IPC for final determination. According to the release, the SSD designation will initiate a whole-of-government assessment by the department and offer community members, individuals, and other stakeholders an opportunity to provide feedback on the application prior to the IPC's decision.
