Detectives Charge Mount Waverley Man Over Alleged Online Scams
Detectives from the Monash Crime Investigation Unit charged a 52-year-old Mount Waverley man on 25 September following an investigation into alleged fraud-related incidents affecting five victims across 20 months.
According to Victoria Police, the man responded to Airtasker advertisements for various building-related jobs using fake names and fraudulent businesses. Police allege he agreed to perform the work and accepted payments, but subsequently failed to complete the tasks or provide refunds.
The alleged offences took place between July 2025 and August 2026, resulting in total financial losses of approximately $20,000 for the five victims. In one instance, a victim allegedly transferred $5,800 for work that was never started. The victim was reportedly promised refunds before the man ceased all communication.
The man faces nine charges, including obtain property by deception, use fraudulent documents, and commit an indictable offence while on bail. He has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 9 October.
