## Story

PANAMA CITY — An estimated 38,000 people, including 8,300 children, require humanitarian assistance after a 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck Panama on October 9, UNICEF announced on October 12, 2026.

The earthquake caused widespread damage to residential areas, schools, health centres, and critical infrastructure, with the provinces of Veraguas, Coclé, Herrera, and Los Santos sustaining major impacts. Ongoing assessments indicate significant disruptions to essential services, including access to safe water and education.

According to preliminary government reports, 656 educational facilities were damaged nationwide, leading to the suspension of classes on October 12 while structural safety inspections take place. Damage has also been reported at a minimum of 25 health facilities across the affected areas.

"Three days after the earthquake, children and families continue to experience fear and distress as aftershocks persist, with thousands of children in the hardest-hit communities facing disruptions to essential services, including safe water and education," said Olga Isaza, UNICEF Representative in Panama.

In response, UNICEF is collaborating with the Government of Panama to deliver emergency support. The agency has provided 16 tents measuring 72 square metres to the Ministry of Health to help maintain health service continuity at impacted facilities. UNICEF is also assessing water, sanitation, and education needs, while monitoring child protection risks related to displacement and psychological distress.

To fund life-saving assistance and early recovery operations for the affected population, UNICEF stated that it urgently requires $2.5 million.
