The New South Wales Government announced it will provide $230,000 in funding to the City of Newcastle Council to conduct a three-year CCTV trial along Beaumont Street in Hamilton. The initiative is intended to improve safety for residents and business owners in the precinct.

According to the state government, the City of Newcastle will lead the project, overseeing the installation of the security cameras. The trial aims to deter crime, support public safety, assist police investigations and responses, and help develop targeted crime prevention strategies.

The project follows community and police concerns regarding anti-social behaviour and crime in the area, which heightened after 22-year-old James Callahan was killed on Beaumont Street in November 2024.

NSW Premier Chris Minns stated that the government acted after listening to local residents, business operators, police, and Member for Newcastle Tim Crakanthorp. Minns acknowledged that while cameras cannot prevent every crime, they provide useful tools to assist police operations and hold offenders accountable.

Crakanthorp welcomed the funding decision, describing the CCTV installation as an essential measure for community safety in the Hamilton area.

The government noted that all NSW grants are distributed in compliance with official eligibility criteria and program guidelines.
