NSW SES Urges Residents to Prepare as Severe Storms and Flash Flooding Forecast Across State

The NSW State Emergency Service (SES) is urging communities across New South Wales—including Greater Sydney, the Illawarra, the Riverina, the North Coast, and southern NSW—to prepare and stay informed ahead of forecast severe thunderstorms and heavy rain over the long weekend.
According to the NSW SES, a cold front is expected to generate widespread thunderstorms affecting the Central West, South Coast, Illawarra, and Sydney through Sunday, before moving toward the northeast early next week. The weather system could bring flash flooding, damaging winds, and large hail, with localized rainfall reaching up to 100mm. Minor flooding is also anticipated along several river systems across the state.
NSW SES Acting Assistant Commissioner Brigid Rice stated that personnel and resources have been strategically positioned to enable a rapid response if communities require assistance.
"Flash flooding remains our biggest concern during this forecast weather. Conditions can change very quickly, and roads that appear safe can become dangerous within minutes," Rice said, warning residents never to drive, ride, or walk through floodwaters.
The agency is advising residents to take early preparedness actions for their homes, families, and businesses. Members of the public are encouraged to monitor updates from the Bureau of Meteorology, follow emergency service advice, and utilize the Hazards Near Me app for warnings.
Emergency assistance for floods and storms is available through the NSW SES on 132 500, while life-threatening emergencies should be directed to Triple Zero (000).
