## Story

Around 4,000 additional social housing properties across regional and remote Western Australia will receive energy efficiency upgrades under an expanded funding initiative announced by the government.

A new allocation of $53.9 million through the Social Housing Energy Performance Initiative (SHEPI) will fund upgraded ceiling insulation for the properties. According to the announcement, the initiative aims to improve household comfort, reduce energy consumption, and lower electricity bills for tenants living in areas that experience extreme heat.

The new funding builds upon an existing $63.2 million investment for social housing upgrades in regional and remote Western Australia. The expansion is expected to bring the total number of homes benefiting from the program in the state to approximately 8,000, nearly doubling the current reach. More than 2,200 properties have been upgraded so far, with the original program scheduled for completion by June 2027.

On a national level, SHEPI represents a $1.1 billion investment aimed at improving the energy performance of more than 100,000 social housing properties throughout Australia.
