## Story

At least 80 people were killed and 27 injured following drone strikes on October 19 in the Abyei region, according to the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA). The attacks struck the Amiet Market and Todach areas, prompting emergency response efforts and calls from the UN for immediate de-escalation.

UNISFA peacekeepers have extinguished major fires caused by the strikes, assisted in evacuating casualties, and provided medical treatment to the injured. The mission reported that it is continuing to verify casualty figures as additional individuals remain missing. In response to the strikes, UN Mine Action personnel are conducting assessments for unexploded ordnance, and the mission has doubled patrols in the affected areas to deter further violence.

A UN spokesperson stated that the mission has not yet made a formal determination regarding who was responsible for the drone attacks. UN personnel are engaging with local community leaders to encourage restraint and prevent retaliation, while urging the governments of Sudan and South Sudan to uphold Abyei's demilitarized status. Dialogue is expected to continue through mechanisms including an upcoming Joint Political and Security Mechanism meeting scheduled in Khartoum.

In parallel diplomatic efforts, the UN and the Government of Switzerland co-hosted the sixth round of consultations on Sudan in Geneva. Pekka Haavisto, the Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, stated at the meeting that the sessions aim to coordinate peace initiatives, prevent regional spillovers, and explore practical steps toward a transitional political phase centered on the aspirations of the Sudanese people. Haavisto indicated that these consultative meetings are planned to take place every three months.
