Australian Government Launches Industry Data Classification Framework
The Australian Government, in partnership with CSIRO and the Department of Home Affairs, launched the Industry Data Classification Framework (IDCF) on September 2, 2026, to assist domestic organisations in classifying and valuing their data.
Developed as a key deliverable under the 2023–2030 Australian Cyber Security Strategy, the IDCF is a voluntary framework aimed at helping organisations of all sizes—ranging from small and medium enterprises to large corporations—manage data risks and improve cyber security outcomes. The initiative aligns with existing standards and was created following research and consultations with industry groups across Australia.
According to the government, the framework serves as a practical tool to help entities identify data risks, apply suitable protections, and securely share data.
Under Horizon 2 of the Australian Cyber Security Strategy, the Department of Home Affairs plans to collaborate with industry to encourage adoption of the framework and adapt it to changing cyber threats.
Greta Doherty, First Assistant Secretary of the Counter Foreign Interference, Cyber and Technology Security Division, stated that the IDCF will help Australian organisations understand the value of their data, strengthen data governance practices, and support secure data sharing and innovation.
