UNHCR and Private Sector Partners Conclude Automotive Training for 50 Refugees in Cameroon
Between 2023 and 2026, the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), in partnership with Toyota Tsusho Corporation and CFAO Mobility Cameroon, implemented an automotive maintenance and repair training programme in Cameroon that trained 50 refugees.
The initiative was designed to expand refugees' access to livelihood and employment opportunities while strengthening their economic self-reliance and socio-economic inclusion. According to UNHCR, the programme drew inspiration from an earlier pilot project conducted in Uganda and offered certified technical skills in the automotive maintenance sector.
The 50 participants were trained across three successive cohorts. The beneficiaries comprised 47 refugees from the Central African Republic—including two women—as well as individuals from Rwanda, Chad, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
UNHCR reported that the project has aided participants in securing employment, self-employment, and entrepreneurship opportunities, thereby reducing their reliance on humanitarian aid and supporting local economic development.
The initiative aligns with UNHCR's broader ten-year goal to halve the number of refugees in protracted displacement who depend on humanitarian assistance by improving access to vocational training and economic opportunities.
