New Seniors Social Housing Units Completed in Riverwood
Older residents have begun moving into 16 newly completed purpose-built social housing units on Munmurra Road in Riverwood, South Sydney, the New South Wales Government announced. The complex is designed to accommodate approximately 30 residents, marking the completion of the first stage of a local seniors housing initiative.
A second stage is currently under construction on Hardwicke Street, which will add 29 homes and is scheduled for completion in early 2027. According to the state government, seniors comprise approximately one-third of the applicants on the social housing waitlist.
The Munmurra Road complex, built on the traditional lands of the Bidjigal clan of the Dharug people, comprises eight one-bedroom and eight two-bedroom units. The facility features level access, ground-floor accessibility features, 12 off-street parking spaces, communal gardens, and solar power installations aimed at reducing household energy costs. The government noted that the project aims to improve housing security for vulnerable demographics, including women over 55.
In addition to these developments, planning is underway for the broader Riverwood Renewal Project. Plans for Stage One of the renewal project, which is slated to include 125 social homes, are scheduled for public exhibition later this year, with construction targeted to commence in 2027.
The projects are funded under the Minns Labor Government's $6.6 billion social housing program, which aims to deliver a total of 8,400 social homes across the state.
