## Story

Humanitarian response teams deployed to Lankien in Nyirol County and Buong in Akobo West County, Jonglei State, providing emergency health, nutrition, and water support following months of severe access constraints, according to a September 2026 update from UNICEF South Sudan.

Sustained aid operations in both locations had been largely impossible since January 2026 due to conflict, displacement, extreme remoteness, and significant access challenges. UNICEF reported that both Nyirol and Akobo West counties are classified in Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) Phase 4 (Emergency), with certain households experiencing IPC Phase 5 (Catastrophe) conditions. The deployment of response personnel and essential supplies was facilitated through logistical support from the Logistics Cluster and the United Nations Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS).

During the intervention, 9,807 children between the ages of 6 and 59 months were screened for acute malnutrition. From the screenings, 1,350 children were admitted for the treatment of severe acute malnutrition, 2,290 were referred for moderate acute malnutrition, and 3,640 received ready-to-use therapeutic food.

Water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) assistance reached 12,956 people with critical supplies and hygiene-promotion messaging. Additionally, 1,556 individuals gained access to safe emergency water supplies meeting the standard of 7.5 litres per person per day.

In Buong, healthcare teams conducted 228 outpatient consultations and 296 antenatal care consultations. Immunization efforts during the mission included vaccinating 325 women of reproductive age against tetanus and 138 children under the age of 15 against polio.
