## Story

The State Significant Development application for the new $2 billion Bankstown Hospital has received planning approval, while construction company Multiplex has been appointed to assist with detailed design work, the New South Wales Government announced in an October 2026 project update. The approval follows the completion of the project's planning and environmental assessment process.

Demolition and site remediation are currently underway across the project location and are scheduled to continue through 2026. Major construction on the main hospital building is slated to commence in 2027.

Under the Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) framework, Multiplex will collaborate with designers, project managers, clinicians, and hospital staff to finalize detailed designs prior to main construction. This phase entails defining specific layouts for every room, including lighting, furniture, fixtures, and bathroom fittings.

As part of the design phase, the project team conducted onsite mock-ups to evaluate configurations for operational areas, such as linen and cleaning supply storage. Managers from Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital also visited Campbelltown Hospital to observe modern workspace designs, staff hubs, and dedicated break facilities.

According to South Western Sydney Local Health District Project Director Julia Underwood, the site visits aimed to assess layouts that support task-focused activities and staff amenities. Operations Manager Snezana Naumovska noted that the visits aided in visualizing workplace changes that have been implemented in other health facilities.

The project team stated that regular engagement with the Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital’s Consumer and Community Engagement Network will continue through monthly workshops across 2026 to gather feedback on hospital design and delivery.
