## Story

The Bureau of Meteorology joined emergency management partners last week to support the launch of the Get Ready Queensland initiative, advising residents to prepare for the upcoming severe weather season spanning October to April.

According to Senior Meteorologist Laura Boekel, the bureau's latest outlook indicates the season will occur amid a strong El Niño and record warm global average temperatures. The period between October and April marks the peak time for storms, tropical cyclones, and floods across Queensland.

The bureau stated that Australia's east coast, including southern Queensland, faces its highest risk of severe thunderstorms from October to December. Concurrently, the arrival of October marks the start of the northern wet season, introducing severe thunderstorm risks to Far North Queensland.

Queensland averages approximately three to four tropical cyclones per season, which also bring an associated risk of flooding. Additionally, the bureau noted that the coming spring and summer are likely to be hotter than usual, raising the likelihood of heatwave conditions.

Boekel emphasized that severe weather can develop rapidly and pose threats to lives and property, urging the community to monitor ongoing forecasts and warnings to prepare in advance.
