The Minns Labor Government announced a $5 million commitment to transform parts of Penrith Lakes into a recreational fishing haven, with the project scheduled for completion in 2028. The initiative will grant public access to two artificial waterbodies within the Western Sydney complex that are currently closed to the public.
Planning and design work is underway for the site, which will be known as the Penrith Lakes Fishing Park. To mark the project's launch alongside the Gone Fishing Weekend, Minister for Western Sydney Prue Car and Minister for Agriculture Tara Moriarty released over 200 native Australian bass into the lakes to initiate a broader fish stocking program.
The project plans include several infrastructure developments to support recreational fishers and the general public, including:
- A comprehensive fish stocking program introducing mature and immature native fish.
- Walking tracks around the lakes and dedicated car parking areas.
- Fishing platforms and disabled access ramps.
- Fish cleaning tables and dedicated bins for discarded fishing gear.
- Picnic areas, seating, tables, and restroom amenities.
According to the NSW Government, the development responds to priorities raised during consultations for the Enhancing Recreational Fishing Action Plan. The initiative follows earlier developments at the site, including Penrith Beach, which the government reported has attracted nearly 450,000 visitors since opening in December 2023.
Ministers stated the project aims to make outdoor recreational fishing more accessible to local communities without requiring boat ownership or travel to ocean platforms. Future commercial options, such as guided fishing tours and tackle shops, may also be explored as the site develops.
