## Story

More than 4 million children in Afghanistan are projected to require treatment for acute malnutrition in 2027, representing the highest figure recorded in the past five years, according to an assessment released in Kabul on October 15, 2026, by UNICEF and Action Against Hunger.

The findings, published in the latest Integrated Phase Classification (IPC) for Acute Malnutrition, indicate that the crisis is set to worsen. The number of provinces experiencing critical levels of malnutrition is projected to reach 14 in 2027—encompassing more than one-third of the country—up from 10 provinces in 2026 and seven in 2025. The organizations attributed the expected rise to seasonal patterns as well as an anticipated reduction in funding that could disrupt preventive services and treatment programs.

According to the IPC analysis, severe acute malnutrition is escalating most rapidly. Approximately 1.09 million children are expected to suffer from the condition in 2027, marking a 16 percent increase compared to 2026, while nearly 3 million children are projected to face moderate acute malnutrition. Additionally, an estimated 1.3 million pregnant or breastfeeding women are expected to experience malnutrition over the same period.

The assessment highlighted several contributing factors to the crisis, including widespread difficulties in accessing nutritious food and safe water. Only one in three children aged 6 to 24 months currently receives the necessary combination of nutritious foods for healthy development, while nearly half of households face challenges in obtaining adequate safe water. Recurrent outbreaks of preventable illnesses, such as measles and acute watery diarrhoea, along with cross-border supply disruptions, have further exacerbated the situation.

Some of the highest levels of malnutrition remain concentrated in southern Afghanistan. Officials from the Afghanistan Nutrition Cluster emphasized that sustained funding is urgently required for nutrition, healthcare, water, sanitation, and livelihood support to prevent further deterioration and sustain essential response operations.
