Migrant Boat Capsizes Off Coast of Djibouti, Leaving at Least 139 Dead
NAIROBI — At least 139 people, including 15 children, have died after a migrant boat carrying just over 300 individuals capsized off the coast of Djibouti late last week, according to a statement released by UNICEF on October 12, 2026.
Several passengers remain missing following the incident, said Etleva Kadilli, UNICEF Regional Director for Eastern and Southern Africa.
Kadilli expressed condolences to the survivors and grieving families, stating that the incident highlights the extreme hazards faced by individuals migrating in search of improved lives and economic opportunities. She emphasized the critical need for measures that protect and support children and families, allowing them to migrate safely without putting their lives at risk.
UNICEF stated that it remains committed to collaborating with the Government of Djibouti to safeguard the protection, safety, and well-being of children.
