Proposal for Employment Hub in Adelaide’s Northern Suburbs to Boost Economic Growth

Article: The South Australian government has proposed the creation of an employment hub in Adelaide’s outer northern suburbs by rezoning underutilized farming land. The Minister for Planning has initiated three separate code amendments for neighboring parcels of land at Waterloo Corner, totaling 120.5 hectares. The proposal aims to rezone these areas from Rural Zones to Strategic Employment Zones, transforming the flat farming land into a dedicated industrial zone.

The rezoning plan comes in response to the limited productivity of the existing farming land due to its small size, fragmented ownership, and inadequate road network. The area’s convenient location, with access to an existing road network and its proximity to Port Wakefield Road and the Northern Connector, makes it well-suited for accommodating increased traffic associated with future employment activities.

The rezoning would not only increase the supply of employment land within the Inner North region but also support the housing boom in Adelaide’s northern suburbs. This proposal aligns with the Greater Adelaide Regional Plan, which identifies the area as a key employment precinct.

The government has emphasized the importance of assessing the three code amendments together to improve efficiency and enhance transparency for the community. Further investigations will be conducted to identify necessary infrastructure upgrades before releasing the proposal for public consultation.
