Article: A significant investment is underway in metropolitan Adelaide to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists. As part of the nationwide Road Safety Program, $37 million has been allocated for footpaths, cycleways, and the installation of Bicycle and Pedestrian Actuated Crossings (BPAC/PAC) at various sites, including school zones. According to an analysis of pedestrian crashes, a majority of pedestrian fatalities and serious injuries occur between intersections, with only a small percentage happening at pedestrian crossings. The introduction of actuated crossings aims to enhance safety and accessibility for people crossing busy roads between intersections.

The planned upgrades also include the installation of a pedestrian refuge on the Fourth Creek walking trail at St Bernards Road. Early works for the actuated crossing at Lyndoch Road are set to begin this week, followed by the BPAC at South Road next month. The $37 million program is expected to create approximately 70 full-time-equivalent jobs during the construction period.

By implementing BPAC and PAC, the government aims to make crossing busy roads easier and safer for pedestrians and cyclists. These crossings will not only benefit active travelers but also individuals with mobility, vision, or hearing impairments, providing them with a safer way to navigate roads during peak traffic hours.

The South Australian and Australian governments are jointly funding the $168 million Road Safety Program, which will support 305 full-time-equivalent jobs in total. The program aims to improve road safety for all road users, particularly vulnerable individuals such as pedestrians and cyclists.
