South Australia Boosts AI Capability with $6 Million Investment,

Australia, SA

Article: The South Australian government, under Premier Peter Malinauskas, is set to invest an additional $6 million into the Australian Institute for Machine Learning (AIML) to expand the state’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) research and development capabilities. This funding will be matched by the University of Adelaide, enabling AIML to enhance its core work and increase its global competitiveness.

With the new investment, AIML aims to further its expertise in AI, machine learning, and computer vision. The institute’s presence at Lot Fourteen has already attracted major global tech companies like Google, Amazon, MTX, and Accenture to establish offices in Adelaide.

The University of Adelaide, ranked #7 globally for AI, has been recognized internationally for its AI research and development capabilities. This additional investment by the SA Government and the university will position Adelaide at the forefront of AI research in Australia, fostering partnerships with local industries and offering research career opportunities for South Australians in this burgeoning field.

The potential economic impact of AI is significant. The Australian Productivity Commission estimates that automation, including AI, could add between $1.1 trillion and $4 trillion to the Australian economy by the 2030s. By strengthening its industrial AI capability, South Australia aims to enhance efficiency, productivity, and automation, positioning itself as a world-leading digital economy.

Dr. Simon Lucey, Director of AIML, expressed excitement about the expansion, highlighting the institute’s previous collaborations with businesses and government entities to leverage AI for product innovation and increased productivity. The extended program will not only continue this important work for South Australia but also offer domestic student scholarships and international exchange opportunities, attracting top talent to the University of Adelaide and propelling the state’s AI industry forward.
