South Australia Emerges as Export Powerhouse, Outpacing the Nation

Australia, SA

Article:

In a remarkable feat, South Australia has emerged as the only state in the nation to experience consecutive export growth, defying the downward trend observed across the country. According to the latest trade statistics, the state’s merchandise exports reached an impressive $17.7 billion in the year up to March 2024, marking a growth of 2.8 percent. This growth stands in stark contrast to the nationwide decrease of 10 percent during the same period.

The primary driver of South Australia’s export success is its thriving trade relationship with China, with exports to the country surging by nearly 40 percent year-on-year, reaching a value of $3.62 billion. The United States remains the state’s second largest export destination, witnessing a growth of 23 percent to $1.9 billion. Meanwhile, Malaysia maintained its position as the third largest export destination with $1.2 billion.

The South Australian government is optimistic about further strengthening this positive trend, particularly following China’s decision to remove all remaining trade barriers on Australian wine. To support the state’s wine exporters and grape growers, Premier Malinauskas announced a $1.85 million China Re-Engagement Support Package in March. This initiative aims to provide the necessary support and guidance for South Australia’s wine businesses to confidently re-enter the lucrative Chinese market.

It is worth noting that Southeast Asian countries also experienced significant export uplifts, with Vietnam, Indonesia, and Thailand recording growth rates of 31, 30, and 29 percent respectively.

South Australia’s ability to maintain export growth amidst challenging times speaks to the resilience of its growers and producers, who consistently deliver world-class goods sought after globally. This success translates into more job opportunities, improved prosperity, and stronger regional communities for the state.
