Supporting Victorian Parents To Alleviate Nappy Stress

Australia, VIC

Article:

The Allan Labor Government is taking steps to support parents and carers across Victoria by ensuring they have access to essential items for their babies, especially those facing crisis or disadvantage. Minister for Children Lizzie Blandthorn and Member for Albert Park Nina Taylor recently met with The Nappy Collective to learn about the incredible work the charity is doing to expand its reach and provide nappy donation points throughout the state.

The Melbourne-based charity has received two grants from the Labor Government to support its operations and provide relief to families in need. In September 2023, a $110,000 grant was provided through the More Support for Mums, Dads, and Babies initiative. Additionally, the Department of Health awarded a $100,000 grant in January 2024 to launch two new programs: School Collective and Corporate Collective.

The School Collective and Corporate Collective programs allow participants to contribute financially to The Nappy Collective while gaining valuable education on nappy stress and wider social disadvantage through guest speaker presentations. Research from The Nappy Collective shows that one in 10 Australian families do not have enough nappies due to circumstances beyond their control.

With over 150 collection points across Victoria, The Nappy Collective has distributed more than 2.6 million nappies since its inception in 2013. The Victorian Government is committed to strengthening maternal and child health services and expanding early parenting centers across the state to support new parents during this stressful time. In addition to the Victorian Baby Bundle program for first-time parents, the government is increasing universal maternal and child health hours and providing $4 million for increased breastfeeding support.
