UN Secretary-General Calls for Immediate Reopening of Crossings in Gaza

UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, has expressed deep concern over the renewed military activity in Rafah by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF). In a recent press briefing, Guterres called for the immediate reopening of the Rafah and Karem Shalom crossings, stating that their closure is exacerbating an already dire humanitarian situation in Gaza.

The Secretary-General urged the Israeli government to halt any further escalation and emphasized the need for political courage from both parties to secure an agreement. Guterres highlighted the importance of international humanitarian law in protecting civilians, regardless of whether they choose to leave Rafah or remain in the area.

According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), tens of thousands of people have already been forcibly displaced due to evacuation orders issued by the IDF. This situation has further complicated the delivery of humanitarian assistance, including nutrition supplies for malnourished children and fuel for response efforts.

Furthermore, a report by UN-Women reveals that over 700,000 women and girls in Rafah are experiencing heightened levels of insecurity and psychological distress. The report highlights the urgent need for increased support and protection for the vulnerable population.

As negotiations continue, the international community remains hopeful for a ceasefire and the reopening of the crossings to address the pressing humanitarian needs in Gaza.
