Victorian Government Launches Rental Stress Support Package to Back Renters in Need

Australia, VIC

Article: The Victorian Government is taking action to support renters who are facing rental stress with the launch of a new Rental Stress Support Package. This initiative is part of the government’s commitment to addressing the housing crisis and providing assistance to those who need it most.

Minister for Consumer Affairs, Gabrielle Williams, unveiled the $7.8 million package at South East Community Links, which will receive a grant to support around 1,400 adults and 3,000 children in the south-eastern suburbs who are experiencing rental stress. This funding will help families stay in their homes and prevent homelessness.

The Rental Stress Support Package builds on the Housing Statement’s commitment to supporting community organizations that provide information, advice, financial counseling, advocacy, and legal assistance to Victorian renters. The government recognizes that around 5% of Victorian households are facing serious rental stress, and the demand for rental assistance is increasing.

The other organizations receiving funding through this package include Anglicare Victoria, Launch Housing, Justice Connect, Housing for the Aged Action Group, Child and Family Services Ballarat, Quantum Support Services, Mallee Family Care, and Tenants Victoria in partnership with local not-for-profit organizations.

Minister Gabrielle Williams stated, “Our Rental Stress Support Package will provide extra help to Victorians experiencing rental stress, building on the more than 130 rental reforms we’ve already delivered to strengthen renters’ rights. The community organizations supported through this package play a critical role in supporting Victorian renters, and we’re proud to support them as we address the housing supply crisis.”

This initiative demonstrates the government’s commitment to assisting renters in need and ensuring they have access to the support they require during challenging times. By investing in rental assistance programs and working with community organizations, the Victorian Government aims to alleviate rental stress and prevent homelessness.
