## Story

A widely used PHP flaw disclosed in October 2026 prompted urgent patching and, for some operators, temporary shutdowns of internet-facing sites. According to the PHP project, the issue involves two critical vulnerabilities that can enable unauthenticated remote code execution affecting PHP deployments exposed to web requests.

The PHP team linked the bugs to CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619, describing one as “RCE via OOM corruption” and the other as “RCE via stale global state.” PHP stated that the recommended remediation is to update immediately because it characterized the risk as affecting “all PHP installations serving web requests.”

PHP said the vulnerabilities apply across multiple runtime modes—including PHP-FPM, Apache with mod_php, php-cgi, FrankenPHP and LiteSpeed—and noted that it considers the risk highest for mod_php, where a demonstrated exploit can trigger the attack before application code runs. U.S. authorities later collectively nicknamed the issue “PHP2Shell.”

For fixes, the PHP project directed users to update to PHP 8.5.12, 8.4.27, 8.3.36, or 8.2.35, and emphasized that there are “no complete mitigations” other than updating. In the same advisory, PHP also outlined interim hardening steps to reduce exposure for environments that could not update right away.

OpenAI said it helped coordinate the response through its “Patch the Planet” initiative, describing that “frontier AI” found the vulnerabilities before attackers did, providing maintainers and security providers time to prepare fixes and protections ahead of disclosure. OpenAI also described how its team and partners contributed research, technical support, and coordination for protections. (OpenAI’s account)

The NSA advised organizations to inventory internet-facing PHP services and prioritize vendor patches tied to PHP2Shell, adding that if an immediate update was not feasible, it recommended taking systems offline until they could be “fully mitigated.” (NSA guidance)
