Sydney Man Sentenced Over Online Threat to Foreign Embassy

A 47-year-old Sydney man was sentenced on 23 October 2026 by the Penrith Local Court to a nine-month recognisance order after making an online threat against a foreign embassy located in Australia.

The sentence follows an investigation initiated in June 2026 by the Australian Federal Police's (AFP) National Security Investigations (NSI) team. The investigation began after the AFP received a report from a foreign law enforcement partner regarding an online threat to harm the embassy.

Authorities arrested the man at a residence in Colyton on 9 July 2026. He subsequently pleaded guilty to using a carriage service to make a threat to cause serious harm, an offence under section 474.15(2) of the Criminal Code (Cth), resulting in his conviction and sentencing.

According to the AFP, Commissioner Krissy Barrett established the NSI teams in October 2025 to focus on individuals and groups causing significant harm to social cohesion in Australia, including actions targeting the Jewish community.
