UN Human Rights Chief Condemns Houthi Attacks on Saudi Airports
GENEVA — UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk expressed outrage over recent Houthi attacks targeting airports in Saudi Arabia, which have reportedly resulted in dozens of deaths and injuries among Saudis and foreign nationals, including an attack on Riyadh's main airport.
Türk stated that attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure violate international humanitarian law. He emphasized that these incidents, alongside other alleged violations committed by all parties involved in the conflict, must be thoroughly investigated and those responsible held accountable.
Highlighting the impact of the ongoing conflict on civilians in both Yemen and Saudi Arabia, Türk warned that continued hostilities would only cause further suffering. He reminded all conflicting parties of their obligations under international humanitarian law to adhere to principles of distinction and proportionality, take constant care to spare civilians, and de-escalate the conflict to prevent additional catastrophe.
