Death Toll Reaches 139 After Migrant Boat Capsizes off Djibouti Coast
At least 139 migrants have died and 84 remain missing after a boat carrying 305 people capsized off the coast of Djibouti on the night of 8–9 October, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported on 11 October 2026. The vessel was traveling from Djibouti toward Yemen when it went down near Guehere, north of Obock.
According to the IOM, the death toll increased after 30 additional bodies were recovered, marking the incident as one of the deadliest shipwrecks recorded on the Eastern Route. Approximately 82 people survived the disaster.
Djiboutian authorities are continuing search and recovery operations for the individuals who remain missing. Meanwhile, the IOM is delivering emergency assistance to survivors at its Migrant Response Centre in Obock, providing food, shelter, healthcare, psychosocial support, and protection services.
Following the incident, IOM Director General Amy Pope called on governments and donors to establish safe and legal pathways for migration to prevent further fatalities at sea.
