DOHA, Qatar — The Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) announced on September 28, 2026, the launch of a new humanitarian project aimed at providing health and nutrition services to more than 50,000 vulnerable individuals in the Abs District of Yemen's Hajjah Governorate.
The initiative is backed by $600,000 in funding from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs' (OCHA) Yemen Humanitarian Fund (YHF).
Under the project, QRCS has rehabilitated and is operating five health facilities, comprising one hospital and four health centers. The organization's support includes the provision of medical equipment, pharmaceuticals, solar panels, water supply, fuel, operating materials, and staff remunerations.
To address acute malnutrition among women and children, the project includes therapeutic and supplementary nutrition programs alongside feeding consultation corners for infants and young children. Community health volunteers will also conduct early detection screenings, referral efforts, and awareness campaigns aimed at malnutrition prevention.
Dr. Munira Dahan Al-Aini, a programs specialist at QRCS's Yemen office, stated that the project enables facilities to deliver primary health care, maternal and child care, reproductive health, emergency medicine, mental health services, and obstetrics, including safe cesarean sections. Dr. Al-Aini also noted that discussions are underway with OCHA to expand cooperation and support health facilities in both Hajjah and Al-Hudaydah governorates.
According to QRCS, the humanitarian environment in Yemen remains severe, with 18.3 million people facing food insecurity, 19.7 million requiring health care services, and millions of children and pregnant or lactating women at risk of malnutrition.
