Three Charged Over Alleged Illicit Tobacco and Vape Importation Involving Post Office Manager
Detectives from the Multi Agency Strike Team (MAST) charged three men, including a licensed post office manager, on Tuesday following an investigation into the alleged importation of illicit tobacco and vapes into Australia.
Strike Force Kerani was established in June 2026 to look into allegations that a 62-year-old man used his senior position at a post office north of Sydney to import large quantities of illicit goods. The joint investigation received assistance from Australia Post.
On the afternoon of 13 October 2026, officers executed search warrants across Berowra Heights, Zetland, and Banksmeadow, and conducted a targeted vehicle stop in Banksmeadow. During the operation, police seized $60,470 in cash, over 3.3 million illicit tobacco sticks, 14,040 vapes, 9,049 tobacco tin pouches, 648 sachets of rolling tobacco, and various electronic devices.
The 62-year-old man was arrested in Berowra and charged with possessing commercial quantities of vaping goods and tobacco. He was granted conditional bail at Hornsby Local Court to return on 18 November 2026.
A 36-year-old man arrested in Banksmeadow faced multiple charges, including possession of commercial quantities of vaping goods, commercial tobacco possession, and knowingly dealing with proceeds of crime. He was refused bail. A second 36-year-old man, also arrested in Banksmeadow, was charged with commercial possession of vapes and granted conditional bail to appear at Downing Centre Local Court on 16 November 2026.
Authorities stated that organised crime syndicates frequently rely on individuals in trusted positions within supply chains to facilitate the movement of illicit goods. MAST comprises 41 officers and investigators from the NSW Police Force, Australian Federal Police, Australian Border Force, NSW Crime Commission, Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission, AUSTRAC, and the Australian Taxation Office.
