Australian Government Highlights Reef Trust Conservation Initiatives
The Australian Government has outlined the ongoing conservation and restoration efforts funded through its Reef Trust initiative, which was established in 2014 to support the long-term resilience of the Great Barrier Reef.
Operating as Australia’s primary investment program for the Reef, the Reef Trust finances targeted programs aimed at addressing major environmental threats. According to the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, these funded efforts focus on improving water quality, reducing marine debris, managing outbreaks of crown-of-thorns starfish, and protecting marine life.
The department stated that the initiative is also delivering restoration and adaptation measures designed to help the reef ecosystem withstand and recover from the impacts of climate change.
These programs are delivered through partnerships involving Traditional Owners, industry groups, local communities, research organisations, and natural resource management groups.
