Man Charged at Sydney International Airport Over Alleged Child Abuse Material
A 29-year-old Southern Highlands man was arrested and charged on Thursday, 15 October 2026, after Australian Border Force (ABF) officers allegedly found child abuse material on his mobile phone at Sydney International Airport.
According to authorities, the man was intercepted upon arriving on a flight from the United States. Following an examination of his mobile phone, ABF officers allegedly located the illicit material.
The man was transported to Mascot Police Station and charged with one count of possessing child abuse material obtained or accessed using a carriage service under the Criminal Code Act 1995, and one count of importing Tier 2 goods under the Customs Act 1901.
He appeared before the Bail Division Court on Friday, 16 October 2026, where he was granted bail. He is scheduled to face the Downing Centre Local Court on 15 December 2026.
ABF Superintendent Shaun Baker stated that the detection demonstrates the agency's efforts to identify and disrupt serious criminal activity at the border. Baker emphasised that every image or video represents the abuse and exploitation of a child, adding that the ABF remains committed to preventing such material from entering the Australian community.
