Australians Urged to Turn Off Taps for Annual Water Night Event
Australians across the country are being encouraged to turn off non-essential taps on Thursday, 22 October, from 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm for the annual Water Night event. The initiative asks participating households to refrain from using running water, including taps and showers, where possible, to reflect on daily water usage habits.
Operating under the theme "Tap. Pause. Level Up.", the awareness campaign aims to prompt reflection on the value of water and promote everyday conservation methods. The initiative highlights challenges faced by Australia as one of the driest inhabited continents, including drought, climate change, and rising water demand.
The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water noted that its support for the event reflects an ongoing commitment to water security and sustainability. In addition to individual conservation efforts, the department pointed to the Australian Government's Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards (WELS) scheme, which assists consumers in comparing the efficiency of household appliances and fixtures such as taps, showers, toilets, dishwashers, and washing machines.
According to the department, the WELS scheme is projected to save 219 gigalitres of water and reduce utility bills by $1.6 billion across Australia in 2026.
